The Hyde Park Estate is characterised by handsome period terraces, garden squares and stucco-fronted buildings, complemented by later developments introduced during the estate’s long history. The majority of the freehold interests across the estate are owned by the Church Commissioners for England, encompassing approximately 1,700 residential, commercial and retail properties. The Commissioners have overseen periods of redevelopment, conservation and investment, helping to preserve the area’s architectural character while introducing new homes, shops and amenities. At the heart of the neighbourhood is Connaught Village, a lively retail quarter centred around Connaught Street, with independent restaurants, cafés, boutiques and galleries.
The Hyde Park Estate has attracted a fascinating collection of residents over the centuries. In 1807, Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh and Earl of Connaught, commissioned No. 1 Connaught Place for Lady Augusta Murray, who had married his brother, the Duke of Sussex. More recently, former Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie Booth purchased No. 29 Connaught Square in 2004 for a reported £3.6 million. Other notable former residents have included Victorian railway engineer Robert Stephenson, author William Makepeace Thackeray and celebrated ballerina Marie Taglioni. The actor Sir Michael Caine has also been associated with the estate.
